Just north of downtown Tampa is the city of Land O’ Lakes, located in Pasco County, Florida.
Land O’ Lakes more than doubled its population in the 1990’s — from 7,800 residents to nearly 21,000, as new housing developments sprouted up throughout the area. During the 2000’s it added over 10,000 more residents, for a total population of just over 31,000 people. This rapid growth has led to the development of new schools and shopping areas.
There are over 11,000 households in Land O’ Lakes. Nearly 8,300 are families and just over 37% have children under the age of 18. Married couples reside in around 63% of the households.
The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.20. The median age of residents is around 38 years old.
Land O’ Lakes average annual income exceeds that of most of Florida. The median household income is $72,500, and the median income for a family tops $81,000.
Background
Land O’ Lakes received its name as the result of a community meeting in 1949. The Ehren Post Office was officially renamed Land O’ Lakes on September 1, 1950. One of Florida’s earliest tourist attractions, Dupree Gardens, called the area home but it was not yet named Land O’ Lakes at that time.
Schools
The schools in the area are run by the Pasco County School District.
There are two high schools, Land O’ Lakes High School and Sunlake High School. Land O’ Lakes has two middle schools, Pine View Middle School and Charles S. Rushe. There are seven elementary schools in Land O’ Lakes: Lake Myrtle Elementary School, Oakstead Elementary School, Bexley Elementary School, Pine View Elementary School, Denham Oaks Elementary School, Connerton Elementary School, and Sanders Memorial Elementary School.
Land O’ Lakes also has two charter schools, Countryside Montessori and Imagine School at Land O’ Lakes, plus two private schools: Academy at the Lakes and Land O’ Lakes Christian School.

If you love the outdoors, you’ll find two beautiful Preserves in Land O’ Lakes: Conner Preserve and Cypress Creek Preserve. These spectacular parks include many miles of stunning nature trails where you are likely to see a variety of wildlife, including woodpeckers, wild pigs, armadillo, and tortoises. It’s also a wonderful place for birdwatching, as several species call the preserve home. Many residents also enjoy bicycling, horseback riding, hiking, and camping.
