Background
Riverview was founded in 1885 on the Alafia River’s north shore. About 100 years earlier, a community known as “Peru” settled on the south shore of the river. The Tampa Historical Society says it’s one of the oldest cities in Central Florida.
In the 1940s, Peru became part of Riverview. Today, both the north and south side of the Alafia River are known as Riverview. A ferry provided the first means of transportation from one shore to the other, but eventually a bridge was constructed to make travel easier.
Alafia means “River of Fire” and the river received the name because of the phosphorus that glowed at night on the river’s bottom.
Schools and Preserves
Riverview High School and Spoto High School are two Hillsborough County High Schools serving the residents of the area.
Many residents enjoy hiking and other outdoor activities in the Bell Creek Nature Preserve. The preserve has over 500-acres of pine flatwoods, freshwater marshes, swamps, open grasslands, oak hammocks, ponds, sand pine scrub, and spring-fed creeks.
