Background
Originally, Valrico was known as “Long Pond” and housed a group of plantations. Many new residents came from the North after the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad was built in 1890. William G. Tousey, a philosophy professor from Tufts College, named the community. Valrico is a Spanish phrase that means “valley of gold.”

Buckhorn Springs is the oldest private golf and country club in the Valrico area. The course, which opened in 1968, offers scenic views and has the highest elevation in Hillsborough County. The private club also offers swimming, tennis, and other social events. Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club offers membership options for the entire family.
Valrico is also home to one of Tampa Bay’s top-ranked courses, the Bloomingdale Golfers Club. This is a “golf-only” club that offers several membership options for individuals, couples, seniors, and juniors (18 and under). Diamond Hill Golf Club is located in the Valrico area and is open to the public.
Schools
There are two high schools in the area, Bloomingdale High School and Newsome High School, as well as three middle schools, Barrington Middle School, Mulrennan Middle School, and Randall Middle School. Valrico also has four elementary schools, Alafia Elementary School, Cimino Elementary School, Lithia Springs Elementary, and Valrico Elementary.
